Message Tagging: an Underutilized JangoMail Tool

Message tagging is a JangoMail feature that will help you organize your account.

How to Organize Your Account

Message tagging is one of JangoMail's most useful features, but it is generally underutilized by our clients. JangoMail saves every message sent by active accounts. With all of this information visible, some JangoMail users may find it hard to find and organize their sent messages. An easy way to filter and find messages is our tagging feature.

A few ways we have seen our customers utilize message tagging:
•Identical campaigns separated according to recipient groups
•Multiple events/promotions, each with multiple campaigns
•Different message types: account updates, reminders, promotions, etc.

This is a JangoMail account sorted with message tagging.
This is a JangoMail account sorted using the tagging feature.

Tips to Get Started with Message Tagging

Always keep these ideas in mind when tagging your account's messages:
•Do you have multiple events or departments sending through your single account?
•You can always add additional tags at any time, but if you have many campaigns and haven't yet used tags, it's a good idea to start with a basic idea of how to organize your messages.

How to Begin Creating Tags

You can enter your new tag into the "Tags" text box. Once created, new tags will appear in your tag list. Each tag can be assigned a color, which can be changed after it’s created.

How to Add a Tag to a Message

To add a tag to an existing message, head to the operations field in the message page and click the assign tags icon. This is located next to the preview and delete icon. Adding new tags is easy. So if you are missing one, it only takes a couple seconds to create it.

How to View A Specific Type of Tagged Message

In your sent folder you will see a list of tags. To highlight a message, just click on the tag you are looking for to tag the messages. After you have finished finding your tag, you can go to "clear applied tags" to leave the view.

How to Manage Tags

At the bottom of your list of tags there is a manage tags link. Clicking this link takes you to the manage tags interface, where you can do anything from renaming to changing the color to deleting a tag altogether.

How Message Tagging Helps You

Message tagging is similar to cleaning up your office. When you have papers all over the place, it can be hard to get anything done. A filing cabinet might be the best way to organize loose papers. Think of this tool as your online filing cabinet.

Don't See Message Tagging?

If you do not see message tagging in you user interface, don’t worry! It just needs to be turned on for your account. Contact our support team today and can turn it on within a matter of minutes.

If you are a JangoMail customer and would like more information on setting up tags in your account you can visit our tutorial or contact a member of our support team.

A/B Testing: Fractional Changes Could Lead to Monumental Growth

High-tech companies across the nation, from Silicon Valley to Dayton, Ohio, utilize A/B testing to evaluate, analyze and contemplate the optimal marketing strategy for their company and their products.

Search engines, clothing stores and merchandise retailers can all discover the best way to reach their customers via email through this evaluation process.

The team members at Google are recognized as being the originators of this testing system 15 years ago. Since that time, companies throughout the world have worked to better the methods used in this process.

A/B Testing Originated from Google.

What is A/B Testing and how can it better your marketing strategies?

A/B, or split, testing has become the standard inspection tool for email marketing. Multiple, not specifically just two, variations of an email are sent out to different groups of recipients. This allows you to see which emails are being looked over or clicked on, and what is leading to transactions.

In simplest terms, you send Email A to Group A and Email B to Group B. Then you extrapolate from the acquired data what seems to be the superior choice for your customized plan.

What to Test?

There is no limit to the variations of ideas your company can test. The point of this evaluation process is to see the strongest components to a business plan so you can test anything from the copy on your website to sales emails and more.

Some commonly tested email units are subject lines, timing of emails and the offers in the email. An offer in an emails headline may be interchanged for a slightly edited discount in another. You may send one group an email offer in the evening, and another group one in the morning.

Even website design has been tested by companies such as Google and Amazon. A/B testing can provide an efficient way to test multiple home pages, and see which one keeps consumers coming and limits your bounce rate.

How is A/B Testing Most Helpful? Can it be detrimental?

There is no risk to implementing split testing into your business strategy. At the same time, there is no doubt that a majority of customers will find some test emails unappealing, but that is why you run the test – to determine which less than enthralling practices your company should discontinue.

The only slight drawback is that the testing period may last a while, and the data can be hard to decipher. However, once the proper amount of testing has been run, the small inconvenience will pay off in the form of your company’s highest rated email offers being sent out.

How can JangoMail help?

JangoMail offers the best email services available today. JangoMail makes orchestrating A/B testing incredibly easy and profitable with the world’s best email deliverability, 24-hour email monitoring and spam protection technology.

A/B testing could be the tool necessary for your company’s sales to skyrocket and JangoMail wants to help you get there.

Good and Bad Unsubscribe Techniques

By: Ajay Goel
Founder, Chairman

When I first founded JangoMail, I would subscribe to as many newsletters as I possibly could, in order to check out the "Powered by ..." tagline at the bottom of emails to gauge which companies are using which email marketing services.  It helped me keep an eye on the competition.  Recently, however, I wished to clean up my Inbox and decided to unsubscribe from all of the newsletters that I had originally subscribed to for data collection purposes, but never ended up reading.  I was infuriated at how difficult most email marketing services' unsubscribe processes are and simultaneously proud of JangoMail's own unsubscribe feature, which is simple, intuitive, and customizable.

I found that if an unsubscribe mechanism is too difficult to use, I'm more likely to click my email tool's "report spam" button, which is an easy way to ensure I don't receive that sender's email anymore, but makes me feel guilty for punishing the sender.

A good unsubscribe mechanism:

  1. Focuses on convenience for the user, not on convenience for the sender.
  2. Should require two clicks at the most. One click within the body of the email message, and optionally one click on the web page to confirm that the first click wasn't a mistake or a bot.
  3. Should be instant on the sender's side. An unsubscribe mechanism shouldn't require "2-3 business days for processing".
  4. Should not require you to log in to a website.
  5. Should not email you "one final email" to confirm your unsubscribe. An unsubscribe means you don't want any more email from that organization.

Let's jump right in and look at examples of bad unsubscribe mechanisms:

Constant Contact--"Instant Removal" is anything but instant

To unsubscribe from an email sent by Constant Contact, you must ENTER IN YOUR FULL EMAIL ADDRESS.  This places the burden of the work on the subscriber, not the sender.  Therefore whenever I wish to unsubscribe from a newsletter sent via Constant Contact, I click "report spam" to save myself the work of navigating a difficult unsubscribe process.  As a veteran and proponent of the email marketing industry, I'm loathe to recommend to anyone to use the "report spam" mechanism in favor of the "unsubscribe" mechanism, since the "report spam" button will punish the sender and reduce their deliverability.  In cases where the unsubscribe process is as infuriating as Constant Contact's, however, I'd fully support clicking "report spam" to save the subscriber time. What's even more incredulous is how Constant Contact names its unsubscribe mechanism "Instant Removal with SafeUnsubscribe".  There is nothing "instant" about their unsubscribe mechanism.

eHarmony--requires a login

I haven't been a paid member of eHarmony for years, but I still receive their emails. Asking me to log in to unsubscribe is inconvenient and time consuming.  As a consumer, I'm more likely to report the email as spam instead of taking the time to figure out how to log in, which would require resetting my password since I can't remember what my credentials are, and then, unsubscribing myself.

iContact--insults your intelligence

The Unsubscribe link is prominent and clickable.  The resulting web page tricks the user though, by having the "Continue to send me email" selected by default.  Why would any legitimate email marketing service set that as the default option after a user has just clicked the "Unsubscribe" link?  The "Never email me again" option should instead be pre-selected so that the user need only click the Update button to complete the unsubscribe process.

Silverpop--confusing

In this example, there is no direct unsubscribe link.  Instead the email message provides an "Edit your Email Preferences" link. The resulting web page requires you to enter your email address, and then in what can only be an attempt at a Jedi mind-trick, the bigger more prominent button is the one to NOT UNSUBSCRIBE.  This button is useless, since it would be expected that the user would simply close his browser if he wishes to keep the status quo.

Early on in my career, I had a Yellow-pages ad saleswoman meet me in my office to sell me an advertisement space in the book.  At the end of our meeting, I thanked her for her time, but told her I wasn't interested in buying an advertisement space.  She then whipped out a contract and asked me to sign a statement indicating that I was declining to buy a Yellow-pages ad.  I was mortified.  Can you imagine a world where we have to sign a contract for everything we DO NOT want, versus everything we do want?  Don't make your unsubscribe mechanism remind me of my experience with the Yellow-pages saleswoman.

Zoniac--living in the 90s

Zoniac is an email marketing tool specifically for the IT staffing industry.  They impose a 24-48 hour window on when the unsubscribe will take place.  Imposing a two day time period on making an unsubscribe happen is akin to having a user go to a website and being told that they must wait two days before the homepage loads.  In today's modern world of real-time database transactions and 24-hour connected servers, there is no excuse for an unsubscribe process to take more than a few milliseconds to take effect.

In Conclusion...

Make your unsubscribe link easy to use in order to avoid being reported as spam. A good unsubscribe mechanism is good for email deliverability, and high email deliverability is tantamount to a successful email campaign.  JangoMail's unsubscribe mechanism is a direct link, and each client can customize whether the link within the email instantly unsubscribes the user, or whether the resulting web page asks for a second, confirmation link.  No 24 hour delays, no entering your email address, no logging in, and no "one final email" after the user has unsubscribed.  This is just one way JangoMail delights your subscribers and optimizes your deliverability.

On Track With Jack: Use our TinyMCE (v3) Editor

Hi JangoMail Users!

I don’t know about you, but I’m still recovering from Thanksgiving. All of those carrots can be quite filling! Before I go down another rabbit hole, let’s take a look at my tip for the week:

Use Our TinyMCE(v3) Editor

Over the development of JangoMail we’ve offered three different editors: Simple, EditLive, and TinyMCE, which is the most advanced and easiest to use. We encourage all of our users to take advantage of this great tool.

Users have always enjoyed our quick image insertion, social media and email links, as well as all of the formatting options. Recently, the JangoMail team has incorporated some EditLive features into our latest version of our Advanced editor, and we will be phasing out EditLive this winter. Here are a few benefits of using the TinyMCE(v3) Editor:

  • If you can't resist pasting copy from Word, use the new "Paste from Word" button. NOTE: We do NOT recommend creating any emails using Word. Copy/paste text using Notepad or a Simple Text Editor instead.
  • You do not have to wait for JAVA to load, and there are no error messages.
  • You can also lock content by restricting subaccounts from editing certain parts of an email.
    • This is more of an advanced tip:  When using EditLive, in the HTML, you would tag an item as conenteditable="false".  Now you can do that in TinyMCE too, add class="readonly".

To verify that you are using our TinyMCE(v3) Editor, follow these steps:

  1. Click Settings.
  2. Select Authoring to expand section.
  3. In the last option, Preferred HTML Editor, check to see if TinyMCE is listed.
  4. If not, click the pencil icon to edit.

  5. Select TinyMCE.
  6. Press Save.

To recap: Double check that you are using our TinyMCE(v3) Editor and make sure you switch over as soon as you can.  We will be phasing out EditLive this winter.

Sincerely,

On Track With Jack: Master and Subaccounts

Hello JangoMail Users!

Jack reporting from JangoMail headquarters. Each day we work with countless agencies, franchises, colleges, large corporations, and organizations. This week learn how our Master and Subaccounts feature can be a useful tool in managing your emails, no matter the size of your company. Here’s my tip for the week, agencies this one is for you:

Utilize our Master and Subaccounts Feature

I’m in the mood to list things this week. So, let's look at the benefits and examples of our Master and Subaccounts feature.

Reasons to use:

 1.  Stay organized: No need to have separate accounts with us. You can work with everything using one primary account.

2.  Fast and Easy: Set up subaccounts fast and control branding with our tools.

3.  Cost Effective: All accounts are billed together.  You’ll get the lowest cost per email on the combined total sending volume!

4.  Rebrand and Resell: You can create a 100% domain-branded private label solution that re-brands JangoMail as your own personal email advertising application.

Here are some examples of how different types of organizations use the Master and Subaccounts feature:

1.  Marketing, design, public relations, and communications agencies take full advantage of JangoMail's highly flexible client subaccount capabilities. Agencies can manage multiple clients or in-house departments. The agency has a master account with JangoMail but has individual subaccounts for different clients.  BONUS: They can then provide detailed reporting to each client but ensure that billing is only available at a master level, and that there is no visibility from subaccount to subaccount.

2.  Another great example of using the Master and Subaccounts feature effectively is in an educational setting.  A college can set themselves up as a master account but have individual subaccounts for each department. The master account can push a template to departments with pieces that can be locked or edited. This ensures branding consistency, and that all the important components of the message are always included. BONUS: JangoMail's Master and Subaccounts functionality allows different levels of control, access, and visibility between accounts.

3.  A final example is in the franchise world, where a franchise can control billing and ensure brand consistency while allowing local content and deals to be included. A template can be pushed to franchisees who can edit parts of it. The franchise controls who has access to billing information, and what is shared between accounts and what is kept hidden. BONUS: It's possible to set it up so that messages need to be pre-approved by the master account before they are sent.

To recap: At JangoMail, we offer flexibility. It’s your email, your way. Give your organization the tools to effectively manage multiple departments, clients, or franchises.

On Track With Jack: Reconsider Email Attachments

Hello JangoMail Users!

Jack here reporting from the JangoMail headquarters. Today's tip comes from our support team:

Reconsider Email Attachments

When you have a large file to send, you may want to think twice about sending as an attachment. Ask yourself, "Is there a better way to get my message across?" Size and security are the two main deliverability issues that will prevent your subscribers from receiving your attached message.

There is a better way to incorporate files into your email marketing plan. Upload your assets to JangoMail and embed them within your email. For larger files, post to your website and create links within the body of your email. Encourage readers to click for more information.

Embedded links will not only increase traffic back to your site, but will also provide you with click tracking data throughout your email to see what your audience is interacting with the most.

Emails without attachments are also easier to access since downloading is not required. It sounds silly, but subscribers are usually on the go and this saves them a step. Convenience is key!

To recap:

  • Attachments could cause deliverability issues.
  • Email links encourage users to visit your website, which will increase traffic.
  • You can track clicks throughout your email to see what your audience is interacting with most.
  • Messages without attachments are easier for your recipients to access.  Your message is just a click away instead of taking additional steps to download.
  • Are there times when attachments are needed? Of course. That's why we support them. Just remember to think twice before you send any attachments to make sure it's the right message for your audience!

If you need help with anything, like installing click tracking, please Contact Support.

Sincerely,

Jack the Jangolope
